If you’re not sure what materials you will need, a knowledgeable staff member can offer advice, but here are some basic bulk materials that you will likely need during the paver patio construction phase.
Topsoil & Compost
When building a paver patio, it is essential that the ground is level to ensure that the result is a surface that’s level to walk on, but also to preserve the integrity of the paver patio. You may need additional topsoil to ensure that this is possible. The topsoil is compacted during the construction process to ensure that the base is solid and strong.
In addition, the topsoil may be needed for surrounding planting beds. Depending upon the plantings used, you may also benefit from having compost delivered to your location. You can help new plantings get off to a get start with soil that is rich in nutrients.
Crushed Aggregate
Crushed aggregate, or gravel, is an essential material needed for paver patio construction. Oftentimes, a ¾” crushed gravel is used in this application. This layer is also compacted during construction to form a strong base surface to build upon.
Most landscape supply stores offer ¾” crushed and washed gravel, ¾” clear crushed stone, and ⅛” clear chip stone. Each is used in different applications, depending on if the surface is permeable. If you are unsure about which crushed aggregate is best for your specific application, chat with an E.P. Jansen Nursery staff member for additional information and recommendations.
Sand
Another layer of material needed for paver patio building is bedding sand. During this construction process, the sand is laid and graded to help establish a strong base to build upon. Since paver surfaces allow for some flexibility, the base is constructed out of various sub-bases, including sand and aggregate. This helps prevent the interlocking pavers from cracking.
Jointing sand is used to add stability between the paver joints. Many landscaping supply stores offer various sands, including polymeric sand, coarse masonry sand, utility sand, and beach sand. Generally, concrete or masonry sand is used during the paver patio building process but always refer to the recommendations that the manufacturer makes for their paver product.
Mulch
Once the paver patio is built, you may need to add mulch to surrounding planting beds to help beautify the outdoor space. There are numerous types of mulch to choose from, including natural blends, pine bark, cedar, cypress, and oak hardwood.
You may also prefer to use rock instead of mulch. Some of the commonly used landscaping rocks are crushed granite, pea gravel, and river rocks. You will likely find wood mulch and landscaping rocks in bulk quantities at a landscaping supply store such as E.P. Jansen Nursery.
