Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis)
This bulb-like, late winter-blooming flower appears around February in the Sussex hardiness zone. Winter aconite is a tiny tuber that presents bright green leaves with yellow blossoms. The flower blooms almost overnight, signaling the end of winter and heralding the onset of spring. Each plant remains small - about 4 inches high - so can be planted together in a high concentration. It’s also a good idea to have them placed where they will be visible from indoors. When planted closely together across an area, the winter aconite creates a stunning mat of tiny yellow flowers. The winter aconite is deer resistant and insect resistant.
Winter Heath (Erica x darleyensis)
This perennial is ideal for homeowners who are looking for winter plants that don’t require a whole lot of maintenance, being highly disease and pest resistant, as well as cold hardy. The winter heath grows up to 1.5 feet tall and 2 feet across in a tight formation, the bulk of which consists of fine, bright flowers. Have the winter heath planted in large groups to maximize its stunning effect. The winter heath is largely left alone by deer but loved by bees in the early spring. The winter heath makes an excellent addition to cottage and English country style design themes because of its fine texture and purple coloring.
